Fewer Night Checks, Better Sleep: Contactless Sleep Monitoring

Overnight checks keep residents safe, but opening the door every two hours also wakes them up. Contactless sleep monitoring helps caregivers check in on the residents who need it, when they need it.

Night shifts in senior living carry a familiar tension. Regular checks help catch problems early, yet every opened door, flashlight and footstep can interrupt a resident's sleep. Poor sleep, in turn, affects mood, appetite and daytime alertness. Caregivers are asked to protect both safety and rest at once.

What the sleep monitor does

The DCC Contactless Sleep Monitor from Poltys Canada mounts on the wall above the headboard and uses short-range 24 GHz radar focused on the bed. There is nothing on the mattress and nothing for the resident to wear. It reports:

In-bed and out-of-bed status. Caregivers can see at a glance who is in bed and who is up.

Not back in bed when expected. If a resident gets up and has not returned after a set time, the team is alerted to check on them.

Frequent night activity. Restless nights and repeated getting up are flagged, which can point to pain, discomfort or a change in condition worth discussing.

Breathing and heart rate trends. Contactless readings build a picture of each resident’s normal patterns over time.

From routine checks to targeted checks

With in-bed status and activity visible through Direct Care Connect DCC™, night staff can focus attention where it is needed. A resident who is sleeping soundly can be left to rest, while a resident who has been up three times or hasn't returned to bed gets a visit sooner. Your community's rounding policies and any provincial requirements still apply. The monitor gives caregivers better information to act within them.

Patterns worth talking about

Over weeks, sleep and activity trends become useful context for care conferences and family conversations. A gradual increase in night activity, for example, is easier to notice in a report than in scattered shift notes.

Privacy and data

The monitor uses radar, not a camera, so no images are captured or stored. Its data is captured locally over the community's Wi-Fi network and does not require a cloud subscription to function.
