Protecting Staff Who Work Alone at Night

Caregivers on night shift often work alone in a wing, sometimes with residents whose behaviour can change quickly. A staff duress system gives them a discreet way to call for help and tells colleagues exactly where to go.

Most of the time, night shift is quiet. But when a situation escalates, a caregiver who is alone in a room or at the end of a corridor may not be able to reach a phone or shout for help. Staff safety is part of resident safety: a team that feels protected can stay calm and focused on care.

What a duress system does

Direct Care Connect DCC™ from Poltys Canada supports staff duress as part of the same platform that handles resident calls. The DCC Staff Duress Badge is worn on a lanyard or clip. A single press sends an urgent alert to colleagues without drawing attention in the room.

Who needs help. The alert identifies the staff member, so responders know who they are looking for.

Where to go. The alert includes location. Advanced Location provides room-level location, while RF Fingerprinting estimates the zone. Without a configured location system, the alert identifies the device and its assigned wearer.

Top priority. Duress alerts sit above routine calls and are routed to the right responders immediately, with escalation if not accepted.

Fixed points too. Room stations with a duress button give staff another way to call for help in the places they work most.

Designing the response

The technology is only half of a duress program. Decide in advance:

Who receives duress alerts. On each shift, including overnight, when fewer staff are on site.

How responders approach. Clear, practised expectations help responders arrive safely and calmly.

When to escalate. Which situations call for a supervisor, security or emergency services.

How to practise. Short, regular drills make the badge feel familiar rather than a last resort.

How to review. Time-stamped records support debriefs and help refine the plan.

Meeting your obligations

Employers in every province have workplace safety obligations for staff who work alone or may face violence at work. A duress system with documented alerts and response times can form part of your program. Your health and safety committee is the right place to shape how it is used.
