About DCC

What is a nurse call system, and how does DCC work?

A nurse call system connects requests for help to the caregivers who respond. Direct Care Connect DCC™ combines nurse call and resident safety for Canadian senior living and long-term care communities. It connects every alarm source, from pendants and call stations to fall monitors, door alarms and staff duress badges, to the caregivers who respond, with priorities, routing and reporting in one place.

Explore the platform
Which care settings is DCC designed for?

DCC is used in long-term care, assisted living, memory care, independent living and hospice. Devices and alert workflows are configured to suit each setting, and a single platform can serve a campus that includes several.

Who we serve
How are current versions of DCC different from DCC Pro and DCC Lite?

DCC Pro and DCC Lite are earlier generations of the platform. Today's DCC adds modern alert routing, mobile communication, care reporting, AI-assisted insights and multi-site management.

Existing systems and integration

Do we have to replace our existing nurse call system?

Not always. DCC is designed to keep what works. It adds its own server and can work alongside many existing wired and wireless nurse call systems, and in some cases it can take over as the server for a compatible wireless system while you keep the devices already installed. A site assessment will show which path fits your community.

Nurse call upgrade and replacement options
Will DCC work with the system we have today?

DCC is compatible with more than 25 nurse call systems through standard integrations such as paging, dry-contact and SIP connections. Tell your authorized Poltys dealer what you run today and they will confirm what can be integrated or retained.

Where are alerts delivered?

Alerts can reach caregivers on the DCare™ mobile app, DECT handsets, SIP desk phones, pagers, wireless message boards, corridor dome lights and the web console, with email and text notifications for supervisors and maintenance teams.

Caregiver communication
Can we manage several communities from one place?

Yes. DCC can run on a centralized platform so regional and corporate teams see response times, alarm volumes and device health across every community, while alerts are still delivered to the caregivers on duty at each site.

Devices and residents

What if a resident cannot press a standard call button?

Specialty call cords are available for residents with limited dexterity, including touch, pressure, breath-activated and geriatric options. They connect to any DCC station with a quarter-inch call cord jack.

What if a resident will not wear a pendant?

Contactless options, such as the DCC Contactless Fall Safety Monitor and DCC Contactless Sleep Monitor, monitor the room or bed, so residents have nothing to wear, charge or remember.

Explore contactless sensors
Does DCC know where a resident is when they call?

Every fixed station and room sensor identifies its assigned location. For wearable pendants, location depends on configuration: Advanced Location provides room-level location, RF Fingerprinting estimates the zone, and a system without location reports the device ID linked to its assigned wearer.

Emergency nurse call
How long do wireless device batteries last, and how do we know when to change them?

Most pendants have a typical battery life of approximately one year. Fall detection pendants typically last around three months because their advanced sensors use more power. Battery life varies by model and usage.

DCC monitors wireless devices and reports low-battery alerts, helping maintenance teams schedule replacements before batteries are depleted.

Contactless monitoring

Do the contactless monitors use cameras?

No. Both monitors use radar, which works from radio reflections rather than images. No pictures are captured or stored, which makes them suitable for bedrooms and washrooms.

How contactless fall monitoring works
How accurate is contactless fall detection?

Contactless fall detection is an assistive technology. It does not detect every fall, may occasionally report a fall that did not happen, and needs an unobstructed view of the room. It supports, and does not replace, care plans, rounding practices and other safety devices.

Explore the Fall Safety Monitor
What does the Contactless Sleep Monitor report?

It reports in-bed and out-of-bed status, alerts when a resident is not back in bed when expected, flags frequent night activity, and tracks breathing and heart rate trends. It provides wellness information for care teams and is not a diagnostic device.

Wander management and staff safety

How does wander management work with DCC?

Residents at risk wear a small tag. When a tagged resident approaches a monitored door or elevator, the door can alarm or lock, based on its configuration and local fire code, and DCC alerts the caregivers assigned to that area with the door location.

Wander management
Can staff call for help discreetly?

Yes. The DCC Staff Duress Badge lets a staff member send an urgent alert with a single press. The alert identifies who needs help and where, and is routed at top priority to responders.

Reporting, security and reliability

What can the DCC AI assistant do?

Ask it questions in plain English and get answers in seconds: response times, alarm trends, which devices need attention, or where to find a setting. It can build a chart or printable report for your next meeting, and prepare configuration changes for an authorized person to review and approve. It works within each user’s access permissions, and every conversation is recorded. The AI assistant is configured for each community as part of your DCC deployment; ask your authorized DCC dealer about enabling it.

See the AI assistant
What reports can we get?

Every alert is time-stamped from call to clearance. Reports include response times by shift, area and day, the longest waits, alarm volume by hour and weekday, and complete call histories, plus a live active alarms board.

Care reporting
Where does DCC run, and how is our data protected?

DCC can be deployed in the cloud, on-premise or as a hybrid. Connections are encrypted, access is role-based and backups are automatic.

Platform management
What happens if the power or network goes down?

Wireless repeaters provide up to 24 hours of battery backup. The server, wireless head-end and essential network equipment should be connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Alerts can continue from powered devices while the equipment needed to receive and deliver them remains operational.

A properly configured generator and UPS can maintain service through a power outage. During a network outage, local alerting may continue where its communication paths remain available, while cloud features, remote notifications and Advanced Location may be unavailable until connectivity is restored.

How long does installation take?

Installation time depends on the size of your community, the devices being installed and how much existing equipment can be retained. Your dealer will provide a project-specific timeline after reviewing your site.

In occupied buildings, installation is typically phased area by area, with your current system kept operational until each area is tested and ready for switchover.

What to expect during installation
Is training included?

Your authorized Poltys dealer trains caregivers, charge staff, maintenance and administrators on the parts of DCC each group uses.

What do warranty and support agreements cover?

Hardware warranty coverage depends on the product and the terms provided with your purchase. Your dealer can confirm the applicable warranty period and replacement process.

The DCC Site Maintenance Agreement includes software updates, remote technical support, cloud backup and recovery assistance, system health monitoring, training and priority hardware replacement handling. The first year is included with your DCC software server licence, with annual renewal thereafter.

Optional Emergency Support extends coverage to after-hours full-system outages, with a response commitment of 60 minutes. This is a response time, not a guaranteed resolution time.
